Mohan Kamath’s career began as a 20-year-old Sales and Service Executive with Mudra Electronics in 1989, at a time when assembling and servicing computers was gaining popularity. His early experience involved confidently dealing with customers and learning how entrepreneurs drive sales. His path later led him back to academics, where he pursued Cost and Works Accounting, which opened opportunities in financial reporting with Shriram Pistons, Delhi. Here, he gained his first exposure to migrating work from manual processes to Excel-based reporting, a significant step in his early career.
In 1991, Mohan secured a breakthrough as an Internal Auditor with the leading pharmaceutical giant, Ranbaxy Laboratories in Delhi (now part of Sun Pharma). Over the next five years, he deepened his understanding of business operations, effective branch management, production planning, materials management, and logistics. His audits focused on establishing process control, cost-effectiveness, and identifying losses due to process and people failures, resulting in significant cost savings for the company.
By 1996, the ITES (IT Enabled Services) boom in India had begun, with captive BPO centers like American Express setting up operations in Delhi. Mohan was instrumental in migrating work from APAC region and later managing teams for Americas Global credit card operations and reconciliations. He also achieved certifications in Lean, Six Sigma, and Quality Management. His leadership in this period earned him multiple global recognitions, including the prestigious Global Chairman’s Award for Quality.
The late 1990s saw a surge in the Indian Telecom sector, and in 2001, Mohan transitioned to Bharti Airtel. Over the next five years, he played a key role in launching the First Time Right (FTR) Mobility Telecom Circle in UP-East, a pioneering effort in the industry. As General Manager of Operations for NCR (Delhi-UP-Haryana 40% EBIDTA contributor) and later Mumbai (fastest growing region). His efforts earned him the Best Customer Service Delivery Award from the CEO, and his team achieved top CSAT and ESAT scores.
In 2007, Mohan joined DELL International Services in Hyderabad as Director of Global Re-design & Re-Engineering. Here, he was exposed to Dell’s innovative global processes and worked with the Global Design Team to enhance global servicing, including implementing chat-based up-selling, which transformed the service department into a profit center.
With 18 years of experience, Mohan aimed to transition to consulting. However, personal reasons led him to Mumbai, where he took up the role of Senior Vice President of Operations for Future Generali Life Insurance. During his 3.5 years with the company, he led pan-India branch operations, establishing processes that delivered top industry results in persistency, customer service, and FTR culture, along with top ESAT and SLA scores.
In 2013, Mohan took the entrepreneurial plunge, founding his consulting and training firm. Under Skill-Mart as a brand – worked with industry experts and government institutions to create self-sustaining models for skilling, training workers and staff in engineering, EHS, and behavioral leadership skills. Also launched Innoseva India Foundation, a not-for-profit aimed at helping NGOs optimize their operations. SMG Consulting & Training, continued to help organization transform operations through process and managerial coaching.
Mohan continues to work with entrepreneurs and leadership teams across sectors, helping them improve engagement with people and processes. His consulting expertise includes gap analysis, leadership assessment, SOP process redesign, lean transformations, and change management. He is also a certified Lead Auditor for QMS (9001), EMS (14001), and OHS&MS (45001), and has worked extensively in training and auditing for clients across BFSI and manufacturing sectors.
